You will bridge the gap between the fields of civil engineering (design of ports and waterways) and maritime technology (ship design, production & operation). Starting from the maritime transport objectives of the energy transition, you will explore the interface between these fields and derive mathematical relations describing their interaction. You will develop an internationally applicable method to apply those relations on different water transport networks, inland as well as sea going, to illustrate the impact of alternative strategies. While the method needs to be generic, at least one of the target regions will be the Rhine-Alpine corridor connecting sea going shipping routes, via the Port of Rotterdam to its hinterland.
A background in civil engineering and/or martitime technology is beneficial. The successful canditate furthermore needs a solid background in scientific methods, computation, data science and visualisation and an ability to deal with the wide range of data sources. Programming skills are expected (at least python). Affinity towards turning complex concepts into real-world practice is important. You can work independently, as well as in collaboration with a larger team. Networking skills and a pre-existing network with relevant stakeholders in the Rhine-Apline corridor are a pre. Good English skills are required.
